Skulls NFT Project

Should designers care about NFT’s? Is it going to change everything? I needed to find out.

This is a personal project to explore a new form of "art": Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).
The project is an exploration of what NFTs are, who they serve, and whether they are worth it.

To make it simple…

NFTs are contracts attached to digital artworks, essentially pixels on a screen. When you purchase an NFT, you are paying for the digital contract that is attached to the artwork, not the artwork itself. While the artwork can be impressive, most of the time it is not.

The closest analogy I can think of is naming a star after someone. You can pay for a certificate that says a particular star has been named after you, but you don't actually own the star itself. Anyone can look at it, but you don't have any real tangible ownership or rights over it.

It's important to note that you can't use traditional currency to buy NFTs. Instead, you need to buy cryptocurrency and then use that to purchase NFTs.

Launching

After organizing and creating a naming protocol, I listed the NFTs for sale on OpenSea and set the price and conditions for each NFT.

Although I didn't sell any, I thoroughly enjoyed delving into this controversial art space.

Opinions & Findings

  • Learning about trends is important. I enjoy immersing myself in the culture that creates these trends. However, by trying out these trends for myself, I often notice their pain points. Those who participate in the NFT world are passionate and believe that this is the future. With so much uncertainty in the world, people are eager to latch onto something that provides a sense of stability.

  • This project has given me a new perspective and a much better understanding of where NFTs fall within the art and design community.

  • Based on this project, I would say that the value of NFTs for your business depends on your customer demographic. If your demographic is interested in cryptocurrency and you have a large following in that community, it could be an interesting thing to try out. However, for most businesses, I would recommend exploring other avenues to expand their brand as there are likely stronger options available.

  • It really depends on what you want to achieve. If your goal is to make millions off of it, then you might be better off observing this trend from the sidelines. However, if your aim is to learn and have some fun with it, then it can be a worthwhile pursuit. My main advice would be to use a blockchain platform that allows you to publish your project for free.
